LAZARUS CLAMP NECTAR OUR LADY, STAR OF THE SEA |
|
Wednesday 26th June, 2002 Arts Cafe, E1 - near Aldgate East Admission £5. Arrive early to avoid disappointment |
| Following the sell-out success of the first HINTERLAND event featuring Fife artists James Yorkston and The Fence Collective, THE GREAT LAKES presents the second in this series of live music events featuring artists from different regional music scenes around the UK.
With a line-up ranging from one to six members, Lazarus Clamp report that they have a wide and interesting array of allergies. Often described as a post-rock act and compared to the likes of Tortoise, Hinterland feels there is much more to their sound. Their friend Noah from Guilford's Fourth Quartet comments: ' To my mind they sound almost devoid of influence, each element being vital to delivering their complex, stuttering rhythms with grace. The subtleties of their sound are meticulously prepared and deftly executed. Maybe this is why they are so difficult to tag with words. You might say they transcend labelling'. Nectar might be described as an alt.country act but, as is usually the case, the label does not reflect the full artistic picture. Inviting a range of comparisons their approach was once described as the sound of Dennis Wilson, George jones and peggy lee crashing their car into drugstore's front room. But comparisons to other artists do not do this band justice. Their songwriting and the particular way in which they infuse melancholy with touching beauty are unique talents they may claim as their very own. Newcomers Our Lady, Star of the Sea are not strictly from Leicester but they are from nearby and have been to Leicester for a curry. Drawing comparisons with artists like Cat Power and Edith Frost, the band is fronted by former I Am Spartacus man Steve Stanley. With this project Stanley brings vocals and a touch of darkness to the minimal beauty which made I Am Spartacus such a compelling proposition. Arrive early for this event and enjoy the aural ministrations of The Great Lakes Hyperbolic Sound Spectacular playing out a programme featuring Beefheart, Burrito Bros and Nuggets era weirdness. The third and fourth Hinterland event will follow at the end of July and August. |
